Deep Drop Fishing Gear Guide

Glorious weather windows combined with a subsided East Australian Current out on the shelf can only mean two things its winter time and that you need to drag out the electric combos for a deep drop mission.

Fishing depths from 100m to as deep as 500-600m of water is no easy task and takes some skill and planning to do it successfully. There is something about the unknown when it comes to dropping to these depths and the anticipation of not knowing what may come up next is quite the buzz.

From bar cod & blue eye trevalla to flamies & alfonsinos to pearl perch & snapper, these are just a few of the more common deep-water species encountered in our waters off Fraser.

Top Tips From the Fisho's Team

    LOGAN:

Invest in a quality marine electronic set up

To pursue this exciting deep-water fishery with success, having a quality marine electronic set up is a must. Your unit or units are important however your transducer type and mounting set up is vital in returning a quality image to help you understand what is going on down there. Having a narrow beam low frequency 1kw transducer or even better a 2kw will make your time searching these deeper limits much more successful.

    DANE:

    Keep it simple!

Less is more when fishing the deep, you almost have to revert your thinking from your shallow water fishing. What I mean by less is more is keeping your rigs simple, a simple rig is hopefully a tangle free rig. Fishing smaller streamline baits, this not only allows you to get to the bottom faster, by reducing drag but this also helps to reduce any line twist which could be created by a bigger bait. Don't over thread your bait onto the hook, simply hook through once maybe twice if you're unsure. Fishing these smaller baits doesn't hinder the circle hook as much from working its magic and finding the corner of the jaw of a deep water ooglie. Deep drop fishing is a great way to experience the beauty of Hervey Bay and catch some of the largest and most prized fish species. So head out, enjoy the scenery, and reel in some monsters!
